Status: in construction

Before a single stone was turned, the layers of archaeology and geography were peeled back.

This allowed the natural heritage of the Barrocal estate to inform the approach to this new phase of São Lourenço do Barrocal.

It’s a task that is part preservation and part creation, speaking quietly to both the built and the natural histories of the land.

Each Barrocal House results of a differentiated approach that carefully positions it in relation to the unique character of the land, where it is discreetly tucked in the curve of a small valley or embracing a rock formation, establishing a dialogue between privacy and views.

The way of thinking about these houses results from the intersection of a traditional Mediterranean way of living in the Alentejo with the modern hospitality project in which they are inserted, reflecting the sensitivity taken towards sustainability whether regarding place, local culture, or community. Each resident configures their home to suit their family, their needs, and their way of life, whilst remaining a coherent part of the whole.

Born among stones and trees, the Barrocal Houses are like them: simple, stripped and vernacular in their essential forms. The arresting granite formations, the ‘barrocais’, keep sharing these compelling stories of life and testifying this attentiveness to the elements, the topography and past wisdom, making this not a development, but a seamless extension of everything that has gone before.
